ABOUT DIGHA

'Digha - The most popular sea beach in West Bengal India' is Situated in the East Midnapur district in West Bengal. Digha is a Beach Town and very popular among the people of West Bengal. Digha has been segregated into two parts, Old Digha and New Digha.

New Digha is less crowded and has more costly and luxurious accommodations. Also, the railway station is in the new Digha. New Digha beach is safe for taking bath and having some water activities.

Old Digha is very crowded, the local market of Digha, which is known as Nehru Market, is in old Digha. Here you will get many budget hotels, street food, and budget restaurants. Old Digha Beaches are not safe for taking baths as there are boulders and rocks along the coast. In the evening many tourists sit along the beach at Old Digha and enjoy street food cool breeze. In the evening the old Digha beach becomes very crowded. If you are looking for a budget stay then it will be recommended to stay at old Digha, the distance between Old and New Digha is 2.5 KM.

HOW TO REACH DIGHA

Digha can be reached by Train and Bus from Kolkata.

By Bus: The distance from Kolkata to Digha is around 182 KMs and takes around 4.5 Hrs to reach. Government/Private, AC/Non AC buses are available throughout the day from Esplanade Bus stop, which can be booked online and offline.

You can also come by own vehicle, cross the second Hoogly Bridge, drive along with Kona Expressway, cross Uluberia, Bagnan, and Kolaghat to reach Nandakumar, and take a right drive towards Contai, from Contai, Old Digha is 32 KMs

By Train: The train is available from Howrah, most tourists prefer taking the morning train which is at 6:30 AM (Time may change), it reaches around 10-10:15 AM, and the station is at New Digha. If you are staying at Old Digha you have to take a Toto to reach your hotel.

FOODS TO TRY IN DIGHA

Digha is famous for street food, at the evening time the local sellers sell street food, which one can enjoy sitting by the coast. The most famous is Fish Fry. A few kilometers away there is Mohona & Sankarpur which is a fish harbor, fish is available at a very low rate. The local steed food sellers keep a different variety of fish, which is on display and you can choose the one you like and then they will fry in front of you and serve you. Fresh hot fried fish. If you are not a fish lover then there is chicken fry, and paneer fry also available. Other than that there are many restaurants that serve different varieties of cuisine, and other street food is also available like Chinese, Pani puri, chips, chats, and others. Many sweet shops are also there selling a variety of sweets.

WHAT TO SEE IN DIGHA

There are some places that are within Digha and some are a few KMs away from Digha and can be reached within a short time. The places of interest are as follows.

  1. Old Digha and New Digha Beach
  2. Nehru Market: Located in old Digha this is the local market, you will get all types of raw food items for cooking also there are small shops selling Paratas & Kachori for breakfast.
  3. Digha Mohona: Mohona is a place where 2 Rivers meet or Rivers flows in Sea. 2 KM from old Digha, it's a busy fish market, where local fish are collected, processed, packed, and distributed. Here you can buy a variety of fish at a low cost also a good point for watching the sunrise.
  4. Oceania Beach: This is a well-maintained beach just 2 Km from New Digha, here you can relax under long trees, very less crowded and also there is a park.
  5. Digha Marine Aquarium: The aquarium has many marine species of fish, you can see a Whale skeleton here.
  6. Digha Amravati Park: This garden is well maintained, one can do boating, there are many types of bids and animals have been kept for visitors, the main attraction of the park is the toy train ride and ropeway.
  7. Digha Wonderland / Kajal Dighi: This is another park that has boating and toy train ride.
  8. Digha Science Center: Good place to see items related to science and technology.
  9. Radhe Gobinda Temple: This is a beautiful temple located a few KMs away from New Digha.

The following places are in Odisha, near New Digha

  1. Chandeneswer Temple: This is a temple of Lord Shiva, located in Odisha.
  2. Udaypur Beach : 3 KM from New Digha, Beautiful place to sit under the umbrella, eat fresh fish and relax. There are broad rides, scooter rides, and other water activities available, and you can see red crabs.
  3. Talsari Beach: This beach is 7 KM away from New Digha, this beach is less crowdy than Udaypur Beach.

The following places are a few KMs away from Digha, these places are in West Bengal and can be visited from Digha or you can plan a weekend trip here.

Tajpur: 16 KMs from Old Digha, very less crowded, ideal for people who want to spend the weekend in peace, the beach is lined up with dense trees also you will see red crabs here. This beach has got much popularity recently.

Mandarmani: 27 KMs from Old Digha, a peaceful and romantic beach, very less crowded, couples will find this place very romantic. You can plan a weekend tour here. This is also a popular beach in West Bengal.

Sankarpur: 12 KMs from Old Digha, this is a fishing harbor where the local fishermen park their boats, after returning from sea catching fish. If you visit in the morning you can see a variety of fish getting dumped here and all the wholesalers buying fish. Also, the beach is well-decorated.

WHERE TO STAY IN DIGHA

There are many Budget and Luxury hotels and Guest houses, available at Digha, you can book online and offline. If you like the crowd you can stay at old Digha, if you want less crowd then New Digha. There are some hotels / Guest House which has kitchen facility if you want you can cook your own food.

DIGHA TOUR PLAN / DIGHA TOUR GUIDE

Here I am sharing a basic tour plan which can help you with Digha Tour, which you can customize according to your interest and convenience.

DIGHA TOUR PLAN 3 DAYS 2 NIGHTS

  • Day 1: Reach Digha within 11 AM, check into Hotel, then get freshen up and take Lunch. Most of the hotels have in-house restaurants or if you want you can take lunch outside also. After lunch gets some rest, then you can go to New Digha beach, enjoy water activity there, then spend the evening sitting and enjoying street food by the beach. After that you can take your dinner outside, there are many good restaurants in Old/New Digha. 
  • Day 2: Get up early and watch the sunrise from the beach, the view is awesome. Then walk to Mohona, and spent some time there, you will get to see various kinds of fish. If you want you can also hire a toto and visit Sankarpur and Mohona. The total will charge around RS.200-300. (If you are not an early riser you can skip this) Then come back to Old Digha and visit Nehru Market, you can also have your breakfast there (Kachori, alu-dum, egg toast, sweets, etc.) Then go to your hotel and freshen up and get ready for sightseeing. Book a ToTo for sightseeing which will cover, Radhe Gobinda Temple, Chandeneswer Temple, Udaypur Beach, Talshari Beach, and Oceana Beach. The tour will take around 5-6 hrs depending on the time you take to a particular place. Toto will charge around Rs 600-800. Take your lunch at a suitable place during the Tour. Then in the evening spent time at Old Digha Beach. There are rocks and boulders along the beach where you can sit and eat fish/chicken fry or other street food. Then take dinner and return to the hotel or you can have dinner at your hotel. Then pack your bags. 
  • Day 3: Wake up early morning and watch the sunrise, then you can go to Nehru Market have breakfast, then come to the hotel freshen up, get ready and check out, board the train or bus as per your booking, and return home.

DIGHA TOUR PLAN 2 DAYS 1 NIGHT

Option 1

  • Day 1: Reach Digha within 11 AM, check into Hotel, then get freshen up and take Lunch. Most of the hotels have in-house restaurants or if you want you can take lunch outside also. After lunch gets some rest. If your hotel is at Old Digha, then you can go to New Digha beach, enjoy water activities there, then spend the evening sitting and enjoying street food by the beach. After that you can take your dinner outside, there are many good restaurants in Old/New Digha. 
  • Day 2: Get up early and watch the sunrise from the beach, the view is awesome. Then walk to Mohona, and spent some time there, you will get to see various kinds of fish, then you can go to Nehru Market to have breakfast. Then go back to the hotel and freshen up, get ready book a toto, and go for sightseeing which will cover, Radhe Gobinda Temple, Chandeneswer Temple, Udaypur Beach, Talshari Beach, and Oceana Beach. After sightseeing spends the evening at Old Digha beach, make dinner, and board the Night Bus to your destination. 

Option 2 **If you don’t have the bus service to your destination at night or you want to take the return train which is at 10:30 AM from Digha toward Howrah (Time may change) or any other reason you don’t want to do a night journey.

  • Day 1: Reach Digha at 11 AM, check into Hotel, then get freshen up, get ready, and take quick Lunch. After lunch book a ToTo for sightseeing which will cover, Radhe Gobinda Temple, Chandeneswer Temple, Udaypur Beach, Talshari Beach, and Oceana Beach. Then spend the time sitting by the beach and enjoying street food. 
  • Day 2: Get up early and watch the sunrise from the beach, the view is awesome. Then walk to Mohona, and spent some time there, you will get to see various kinds of fish, then you can go to Nehru Market to have breakfast. Then go back to the hotel get ready & check out for your return. 

**If you are not interested in sightseeing then you can skip the sightseeing part.
